So You're Getting Dentures... What to Expect

Q: WHY DO I HAVE TO FILL OUT A HEALTH HISTORY?

A: Health histories are required by state law plus your diseases and medications affect the continued fit and comfort of your dentures. The more accurate history we have, the better able we are to serve you.

Q: IF I WANT MY TEETH BY THE HOLIDAYS, WHEN SHOULD I COME IN TO SEE YOU?

A: Donít delay! We want to get those teeth working comfortably for you so you can enjoy the holiday seasonís treats. Make sure you use your insurance benefits before year end.

Q: HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SEE YOU?

 A. After your new dentures are working properly, we offer a complimentary check-up yearly. At that time we look for oral differences and make certain your teeth are still comfortable . We also clean your teeth at this appointment.

Q: SINCE I WEAR DENTURES, SHOULD I DO ANYTHING SPECIAL TO TAKE CARE OF MY MOUTH?

A: Yes. To keep your gums healthy you should massage them lightly with a washcloth daily and gargle with a mouth wash.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW MY GUMS ARENíT HEALTHY?

A: Normally, you would have some soreness, but not always. Inspect your gums and if they are bright red or puffy white or discolored in any way, see me immediately.

Q: WHAT GUM PROBLEMS COULD EXIST?

A: You could have a pressure sore that could cause pain; an infection like yeast that sometimes does not cause any pain or growths that could be nothing i.e. a wart or that could indicate a cancerous condition.

Q: WHAT IS A PRECISION ATTACHMENT?

A: It is a mechanical device placed by a dentist to snap or clip your denture on to. There are many kinds of precision attachments. Come in and discuss your options with me before having all your teeth pulled.

Q: WHAT IS AN OVERDENTURE?

A: An overdenture fits over two remaining teeth or over precision attachments placed by a dentist. The denture attaches to these teeth or attachments to provide greater stability.

Q: WHY CHOOSE TO HAVE AN OVERDENTURE?

A: By saving several teeth and/or having precision attachments placed on these teeth, it allows your denture to snap or clip on. This allows the denture to seat solidly and not float.

Q: WHAT IS A PARTIAL DENTURE?

A: A partial denture is a chromium cobalt metal frame with denture teeth replacing missing natural teeth. This is the most common kind of partial denture.

Q: What other kinds of partial dentures are there besides the chromium cobalt metal frame?

A: Other types that we offer are the DuraFlexô and DurAcetal ô. These are not metal. They are a safe thermoplastic resin which allows us to use tissue colored pink and tooth colored clasps.

Q: AFTER I HAVE MY REPLACEMENT OR NEW DENTURES, WHAT AFTER CARE IS PROVIDED?

A: In our office, three months of aftercare is included. We want to ensure the dentures function properly for you. Immediate denture patients receive nine months of aftercare.
